On Thursday, Nov 23rd, a riot broke out in Dublin City Centre. The police had to show up in full force as a tram car, three buses, and three police vehicles were set on fire. Many businesses were also looted. The spark that led to this eruption (worse than they’ve seen in decades) was a stabbing. A man in his 40’s (believed to be an immigrant) stabbed three children and a woman in her 30’s. A delivery driver on his motorcycle (also an immigrant) pulled over, and used his helmet striking the attacker’s head bringing him to the ground. Thankfully all survived the attack, and the suspect is in custody.
Tensions have been building in parts of Ireland regarding the seemingly unlimited acceptance of refugees (in the midst of a housing crisis across Ireland). Simultaneously, the city centre has seen an increase in violence since the covid lockdowns. There are aspects of racism involved in the tensions for sure. However, there are also legitimate concerns regarding how refugees are brought in, supported, and treated once they arrive, bringing particular burden to the Irish system considering the longstanding housing crisis.
I wanted to give you a little update about this to let you know we are safe, Ireland is not a dangerous country over all, but we also need your prayers in these areas. We want to play a part in bringing peace and healing to people experiencing fear and unrest.
Thank you for all your prayers and support. God is using us to make a difference!
